There is a certain expectation for end-of-the world films. Some deliver ("The Day After Tomorrow," "Independence Day"), some fall flat ("The Day the Earth Stood Still," "War of the Worlds"). The audience does not expect a plot or deep characterization. The audience does expect spectacular special effects, characters that are flawed but "real," and familiar landmarks being blown up/washed away/etc. "2012" is a masterful representation of the genre with capable actors and arresting visuals. One of the best films of its kind, which reads like a faint praise - but these are often massively expensive and risky films. "2012" is everything it should be and more.
